Authorship and Contributorship Policy

JURNAL ILMIAH SAINS (JIS)

Authorship and Contributorship Policy

Research Integrity • Transparency • Accountability

01. Introduction

Jurnal Ilmiah Sains (JIS) is committed to integrity, transparency, fairness, and accountability in scholarly authorship. Authorship represents both academic recognition and responsibility for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of published research.

This policy establishes criteria for authorship, recognizes contributor roles, specifies author responsibilities, and outlines procedures for authorship changes and disputes. It draws on ICMJE recommendations, COPE guidance, and the CRediT taxonomy, adapted to the multidisciplinary scope of JIS, including mathematics, statistics, computer science, physics, chemistry, and biology.

02. Criteria for Authorship

All listed authors must satisfy all four of the following criteria:

Criterion 1

Substantial contributions to the conception or design of the study, or to the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data.

Criterion 2

Drafting the manuscript or critically revising it for important intellectual content.

Criterion 3

Final approval of the version to be published.

Criterion 4

Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work and to ensure that questions about the accuracy or integrity of any part are appropriately investigated and resolved.

All individuals who meet these criteria should be listed as authors. Contributors making substantial contributions should be given an opportunity to participate in drafting, critical revision, and final approval.

Academic position, institutional authority, funding, or general supervision alone do not justify authorship.

03. Author Contributions

JIS encourages clear and accurate author contribution statements using the Contributor Roles Taxonomy (CRediT) as appropriate:

Conceptualization • Methodology • Software • Validation • Formal Analysis • Investigation • Resources • Data Curation • Writing – Original Draft • Writing – Review and Editing • Visualization • Supervision • Project Administration • Funding Acquisition

An author may have multiple roles, and a role may be shared. Naming a CRediT role alone does not establish authorship unless all four authorship criteria are met. JIS encourages an Author Contributions Statement for multi-author manuscripts.

04. Responsibilities of Authors

  1. Submit original work not published or simultaneously under consideration elsewhere.
  2. Report methods, data, analyses, results, and conclusions truthfully and accurately.
  3. Cite prior scholarship appropriately and avoid plagiarism, fabrication, falsification, and misleading data manipulation.
  4. Review and approve the manuscript and subsequent substantive revisions.
  5. Disclose funding, relevant conflicts of interest, and ethical approvals where applicable.
  6. Inform the editors promptly of significant errors discovered before or after publication and cooperate with correction procedures.

05. Corresponding Author

The corresponding author is the principal contact with the editorial office during submission, peer review, publication, and post-publication communication.

  1. Ensure that all authors meet the criteria and approve the submitted and revised manuscript.
  2. Enter complete, accurate author names, affiliations, and contact information in OJS.
  3. Coordinate required documentation, including JIS's originality and copyright-related declarations (Form A), where applicable.
  4. Distribute editor and reviewer communications to all co-authors and coordinate timely responses.
  5. Remain available after publication to respond to integrity or accuracy questions.

06. Authorship Order and Affiliations

All authors must agree on authorship order before submission. JIS does not determine author rank. Affiliations must accurately reflect each author's institutional association with the work. Authors are encouraged to provide ORCID identifiers.

07. Changes in Authorship

Requests to add, remove, or reorder authors after submission require a written explanation, written agreement from all listed authors, consent of authors being added or removed, and an updated contribution statement when relevant. The Editor-in-Chief or designated editor will review the request. Post-publication changes require exceptional justification and may need a formal correction. Unresolved disputes may be referred to the appropriate institutions.

08. Acknowledgment of Non-Author Contributors

Individuals who contributed but do not meet all four authorship criteria should be acknowledged, with their permission. Examples include technical assistance, administrative support, language editing, general supervision, financing, and limited data collection. Their contributions should be described accurately.

09. Unethical Authorship Practices

  • Gift authorship: crediting an individual without qualifying contributions.
  • Guest authorship: including an individual primarily for status, prestige, or influence.
  • Ghost authorship: concealing a contributor who qualifies for authorship.
  • Coercive authorship: demanding authorship through positional authority without sufficient contributions.
  • Unauthorized authorship: naming an individual without knowledge or consent.

Suspected misconduct will be examined under JIS publication ethics procedures and relevant COPE guidance. Actions may include seeking clarification, pausing review, rejection, referral to an institution, or post-publication correction or retraction as appropriate.

10. Use of Artificial Intelligence

AI systems and generative AI tools cannot be listed as authors or co-authors because they cannot assume accountability for a scholarly work. Authors must comply with the JIS AI Tools Usage Policy, disclose AI assistance when that policy requires it, verify AI-assisted content and references, and accept responsibility for the final manuscript.

11. Authorship Disputes and Editorial Procedures

The editorial office will handle authorship concerns fairly and confidentially and may request author contribution statements, correspondence, and written agreements. The journal does not adjudicate institutional or legal ownership of authorship. Unresolved disputes may be referred to relevant institutions; editorial decisions will follow evidence, journal policies, and publication ethics guidance.

12. Authorship Declaration

By submission, the corresponding author confirms on behalf of the authors that:

  1. Every listed author meets the authorship criteria and has made a legitimate contribution.
  2. All authors have read, approved, and agreed to submit the manuscript.
  3. No eligible author has been intentionally omitted and no individual named without consent.
  4. Authors will cooperate in addressing any integrity questions about the work.
  5. Required declarations regarding originality, funding, conflicts of interest, and AI use have been submitted as applicable.

13. Policy Implementation

This policy applies to manuscripts submitted to JIS and should be read together with its Author Guidelines, Publication Ethics, Copyright and Licensing, and AI Tools Usage Policy. The editorial team may request supporting documentation if authorship concerns arise. The policy should be reviewed periodically.
