Authorship Criteria

CHEMISTRY PROGRESS is committed to upholding the principles of authorship transparency, accountability, and integrity in scholarly publishing. Authorship of a manuscript must be based on substantial intellectual contributions to the research and the preparation of the manuscript. The journal expects all listed authors to meet the authorship criteria outlined below.

1. Criteria for Authorship

To qualify for authorship in CHEMISTRY PROGRESS, an individual must satisfy all of the following criteria:

  1. Substantial contribution to the research: The individual must have made a significant contribution to the conception or design of the study, the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of research data, or the development of essential research methods.

  2. Contribution to manuscript preparation: The individual must have participated in drafting the manuscript or critically revising it for important intellectual content.

  3. Final approval: The individual must have reviewed and approved the final version of the manuscript submitted for publication.

  4. Accountability: The individual must agree to be accountable for their contributions and to assist in ensuring that questions concerning the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are appropriately investigated and resolved.

All four criteria must be fulfilled for an individual to qualify as an author.

2. Contributors Who Do Not Qualify for Authorship

Individuals who contribute to a study but do not meet all the authorship criteria should not be listed as authors. Such contributions may include routine technical assistance, administrative support, general supervision, language editing, funding acquisition without substantial intellectual involvement, or the provision of research materials alone.

These contributions should be appropriately acknowledged in the Acknowledgments section, with the individual's permission where appropriate. Financial support and other relevant contributions must be disclosed in accordance with the journal's policies.

3. Author Responsibilities

All authors share responsibility for the integrity and accuracy of the published work. Each author must be able to identify their own contributions and have confidence in the integrity of the contributions made by their co-authors.

Authors are responsible for ensuring that:

  • All individuals listed as authors meet the journal's authorship criteria.

  • All eligible contributors who meet the criteria are appropriately recognized.

  • All listed authors have approved the final manuscript and agreed to its submission to CHEMISTRY PROGRESS.

  • The manuscript is original and does not infringe upon the intellectual property rights of others.

  • Relevant funding sources, competing interests, and other required declarations are disclosed.

  • Any concerns regarding research integrity or publication ethics are promptly communicated to the editorial office.

4. Corresponding Author

The corresponding author serves as the primary contact between the authors and the editorial office throughout the submission, peer-review, and publication processes.

The corresponding author is responsible for ensuring that all authors have reviewed and approved the manuscript, that author names and affiliations are accurate, and that all required declarations and supporting documents are submitted. The corresponding author must also communicate editorial decisions, revision requests, and other relevant information to all co-authors.

The designation of a corresponding author does not diminish the responsibilities of the other authors for the integrity of the work.

5. Author Order and Contributions

The order of authors should be determined collectively by the authors before submission and should reflect their relative contributions in accordance with disciplinary conventions and agreements among the research team.

CHEMISTRY PROGRESS encourages authors to describe individual contributions transparently, where applicable, using the Contributor Roles Taxonomy (CRediT) or another appropriate contribution statement. Such statements may identify roles including conceptualization, methodology, investigation, data curation, formal analysis, writing, review and editing, supervision, and project administration.

Contribution statements do not replace the journal's authorship criteria. Individuals who do not meet all authorship requirements should be acknowledged appropriately rather than included as authors solely because they performed a particular task.

6. Changes in Authorship

Any request to add, remove, or rearrange authors after manuscript submission must be submitted to the editorial office with a clear explanation and written agreement from all authors concerned, including any individual being added or removed.

CHEMISTRY PROGRESS reserves the right to request additional documentation before approving changes to authorship. Changes will be considered only when adequately justified and consistent with the journal's publication ethics policies. Authorship disputes may require referral to the relevant institutions for resolution.

Changes in authorship after publication will be considered in accordance with the journal's correction policy and applicable publication ethics guidance.

7. Unethical Authorship Practices

CHEMISTRY PROGRESS does not permit unethical authorship practices, including but not limited to:

  • Guest or honorary authorship: Listing individuals who have not made sufficient contributions to qualify for authorship.

  • Gift authorship: Including an individual as an author as a favor or courtesy without meeting the authorship criteria.

  • Ghost authorship: Excluding individuals who have made substantial contributions that qualify them for authorship.

  • Undisclosed authorship changes: Adding, removing, or rearranging authors without appropriate justification, disclosure, or consent.

  • Misrepresentation of contributions: Providing inaccurate or misleading statements about the contributions made by authors or other contributors.

Suspected authorship misconduct will be assessed by the editorial team and may result in requests for clarification, suspension of editorial processing, rejection of the manuscript, correction of the published record, or referral to the relevant institution, depending on the circumstances.

8. Editorial Oversight and Ethical Standards

CHEMISTRY PROGRESS reserves the right to request clarification or supporting documentation concerning authorship and individual contributions whenever necessary. The journal will handle authorship concerns fairly and transparently, following recognized publication ethics principles, including relevant guidance from the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

By submitting a manuscript to CHEMISTRY PROGRESS, all authors confirm that the authorship information is accurate, that all listed authors meet the journal's criteria, and that they accept responsibility for the integrity of the work in accordance with their respective contributions.
