Abstract

Cervical cancer is a pathological condition that is one of the main causes of death in the world. There are various medical treatments such as chemotherapy and immunotherapy but the treatment causes dangerous side effects at very high costs. Marine algae are an excellent source of bioactive compounds that are proven to have biofunctional activities, such as antioxidants and anti-cancer. This review focuses on the cytotoxic activity of Laurencia sp. against HeLa cells. Recent discoveries have shown that Laurencia sp. has cytotoxic activity ranging from IC50 21.81–32.49 µg/mL to inhibit the development of HeLa cells. Polysaccharides from marine algae are also known to cause cell death by inducing apoptosis. Carrageenan also has shown anti-HPV efficiency in vitro. By looking at the activity and ability present in Laurencia sp. to act against HeLa cells, this seaweed can be a source for new natural products as anticancer and Indonesia has a large number of seaweed species that contain many bioactive compounds that are beneficial to the body and can be made into high-value health products.
