The purpose of this study was to determine the antioxidant activity of seaweed Eucheuma spinosum through phytochemical and DPPH test (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhidrazyl). This study utilized 2 solvents i.e. methanol and ethanol with 2 different concentrations (95% and 50%). The analysis included percentage of yields, phytochemical test, and IC50 value from each extract. The highest yield of extract was obtained on the sample extracted with 50% ethanol with the yield value of 1.8%. Phytochemical results showed that samples extracted with 95% methanol had 6 components of antioxidants namely alkaloids, steroids, saponins, terpenoids, polyphenols and flavonoids. The best IC50 value was presented by sample extracted with 95% ethanol (97,522 ppm). Overall, this study demonstrated the effectiveness of fresh Euchema spinosum samples as a source of natural antioxidants.
